5 reasons why technology doesn’t eliminate import risks

Por S3 Sourcing

09 Feb 2026

Barcelona is one of Europe’s most active tech ecosystems. Startups, scaleups, and digital companies design, validate, and scale products that are often manufactured thousands of kilometers away—especially in China and across Asia. Technology has transformed this process, but at S³ Group we see it every day: digitalization does not mean risk-free importing.

ERPs, digital payments, advanced tracking systems, or even AI can help—but they don’t replace operational control or real on-the-ground experience.

1. Importing is still complex, even in digital environments

International sourcing involves multiple variables that are hard to control:

  • overseas suppliers
  • constantly changing regulations
  • complex global logistics
  • cultural and operational gaps

Technology streamlines workflows, but it doesn’t prevent production issues, delays, or compliance failures without a solid preventive strategy.

2. Risks technology alone cannot eliminate

Financial risks

  • currency fluctuations affecting margins
  • advance payments without real guarantees
  • deviations between estimated and final costs

Digital tools provide visibility, but not protection without financial planning.

Logistics risks

Damages, losses, loading errors, or port congestion still happen. Once goods leave the factory, the ability to react is extremely limited.

Customs and regulatory risks

Incorrect HS codes, incomplete documentation, or regulatory misinterpretation lead to delays and penalties. Software doesn’t replace legal and customs expertise.

Quality and certification risks

CE marking, testing, and technical compliance cannot be guaranteed by supplier documents alone. Without on-site verification, legal exposure remains.

Intellectual property risks

Copies or misuse of IP are rarely detected through digital platforms—and often appear only once the product reaches the market.

3. The real limits of digitalization

  • · uneven technological infrastructure across supplier countries
  • · inconsistent data quality
  • · cybersecurity and payment fraud risks
  • · a false sense of control

Technology adds value—but it can also mask critical issues.

4. The key: technology + people

At S³ Group, we work with a balanced approach:

  • supplier audits
  • quality control at origin
  • independent document validation
  • deep local market knowledge in Asia

Technology accelerates processes—but people on the ground protect your business.
