The transition towards net-zero cities is no longer merely a political debate or a matter of individual awareness. In today’s urban context, genuine decarbonisation requires a shift from isolated initiatives to coordinated and interconnected systems. And it is precisely here that technology is becoming a fundamental piece of the puzzle.

The traditional disconnect between public administration decisions, corporate sustainability strategies and citizens’ daily behaviour has limited the real impact of many environmental initiatives. To overcome this fragmentation, the tech ecosystem is developing new models capable of channelling efforts in a transparent, measurable and collective way.

Traceability and Data: Technology as a Bridge

The value of real-time data and digital architecture now makes it possible to approach urban climate action from a completely different perspective:

  • Traceability without opacity: distributed ledger technologies such as blockchain make it possible to audit climate actions, ensuring that emissions-mitigation efforts do not become trapped in speculation or greenwashing.

  • Artificial Intelligence and impact data: advanced analytics can transform complex volumes of urban and energy data into personalised recommendations for consumers, businesses and local authorities alike.

  • Incentive-based economies and shared value: the real driver of change lies in creating digital reputation and economic-return mechanisms that encourage sustainable decisions by citizens and ensure that these decisions have a positive impact on local businesses and municipal management.

A Meeting to Discuss the Future of Green Technology in Barcelona

To explore how these digital models can be scaled and to analyse real-world case studies, the virtual event “How Can We Accelerate the Decarbonisation of Cities? Collaboration Between Citizens, Businesses and Public Administrations” will take place on Tuesday, 22 September at 6:00 p.m.

The event will bring together key figures from the institutional, academic and business sectors, including Dr Montserrat Casanovas, Professor at the University of Barcelona (UB) and President of ACCID; representatives of the technology platform Biyiud, Manuel Villa-Arrieta and Jaume Catarineu; researchers from ESCI-UPF; representatives of the Viladecans City Council; and representatives from the sustainable retail and fashion sectors.

The session, organised within the framework of the Col·legi d’Economistes de Catalunya and the city’s innovation ecosystem, aims to highlight that large-scale decarbonisation will only be possible if we succeed in integrating technology, governance and active participation within a single ecosystem.

The event will be held online and is free of charge, subject to prior registration. Further details about the programme can be found in the event agenda.
