BlueTechPort has announced the launch of the Lighthouse International Acceleration Program, a new initiative designed to attract international startups developing solutions in maritime innovation, ports, logistics, and the broader blue economy. Applications open today and will remain open until June 1st, 2026, targeting seed and early-growth startups with global ambition and mature technologies (TRL ≥ 5).
Led by BlueTechPort, the program is supported by the Port of Barcelona and brings in the technical expertise of Mind the Bridge.
Strengthening Barcelona as a global blue economy hub
Barcelona has steadily positioned itself as one of Europe’s most dynamic hubs for maritime innovation and the blue economy, driven by a major global port, strong public-private collaboration, leading research institutions, and a growing startup ecosystem. According to the Blue Economy Observatory, the sector generated €11,190.7 million in turnover in Barcelona, representing 5% of the city’s economic activity. It includes high value-added activities with productivity levels more than 20% above the city average.
“Innovation, digitalization, and sustainability are key pillars of the Port of Barcelona’s strategy,” said Emma Cobos, Director of Innovation and Blue Economy Strategy at the Port of Barcelona. “This program reinforces our commitment to becoming a smart, decarbonized, innovation-driven logistics hub, connecting global startups with real challenges and opportunities.”
In this context, BlueTechPort—the Port of Barcelona’s innovation hub for the blue economy, managed by the World Trade Center Barcelona—plays a key role in fostering innovation and enabling connections across the ecosystem.
A real-environment acceleration program for maritime innovation
Starting July 6th, 2026, the 12-week hybrid program will combine in-person activities at BlueTechPort in Barcelona with online sessions, offering access to the Port of Barcelona as a real-world testing environment.
Carles Anglada, CEO of World Trade Center Barcelona, noted: “BlueTechPort was created with the goal of turning Barcelona into the leading Mediterranean hub for the blue economy. With Lighthouse, we are opening our port as a real-world testbed for startups worldwide ready to shape the future of maritime innovation and sustainable port ecosystems.”
Selected startups will benefit from:
Personalized mentorship and expert advisory
Access to pilot and testing opportunities
Connections with corporates, ports, and investors
Participation in Smart City Expo World Congress – Tomorrow.Blue Economy (Nov 3–5, 2026)
The 2026 edition will select up to 8 startups across verticals such as:
Digital ports and automation
Maritime logistics and mobility
Maritime infrastructure and resilience
Port and maritime sustainability
Ocean and environmental monitoring
Marine biotechnology
Participation is free, equity-free, and does not require relocation, although office space will be available at BlueTechPort.
Connecting startups, corporates, and global markets
As a business hub located within the port area, BlueTechPort will play a central role in connecting the international business community with the program. Mind the Bridge will contribute its expertise in international acceleration and open innovation.
“Ports are becoming powerful innovation platforms and attractive hubs for international startups and talent,” said Francesca Cavanna, Managing Director Europe at Mind the Bridge. “By connecting startups with the Port of Barcelona and its ecosystem, Lighthouse creates the conditions for real pilots, real partnerships, and real scale—the exact ingredients startups need to grow globally.”
