On Wednesday, November 13th, Tech Up Nights return to the terrace of Pier01! In its 15th edition, this event will feature tech use cases by Eurecat & Mediamarkt, followed by a networking session designed by and for tech profiles.

Tech Up Nights is an initiative created together with Ocado Technology with the aim of bringing together the tech community of Barcelona. Our goal is to inspire you with high-quality content and provide the opportunity to establish an open dialogue between technical attendees and tech speakers.   By Rafael Redondo Tejedor (AI and Computer Vision Researcher, and Head of the Image Group at Eurecat’s Multimedia Technologies Unit). Eurecat will delve into video summarization, which is the creation of a concise and coherent summary of a longer video by selecting key moments. In the media industry, this technology can enable new smart tools to search within large media databases, or create more attractive versions news, interviews or longer events. In this talk, we will go through innovative technology based on the combination of large language models (LLMs) and speech transcription to assist in the automatic generation of audiovisual summaries, including the integration of an intuitive and functional UX designed and validated by several professional profiles in the media sector.

On November 20th, at 10 a.m. in the Pier01 Auditori, the second edition of ‘Investment Round’ arrives, a private call for startups promoted by Tech Barcelona in collaboration with Aptki, which brings entrepreneurs (associated with Tech Barcelona) and investors to the same table. The 2 or 3 startups selected for each round can pitch their project to an investment firm invited by our partner Aptki. Startups will receive feedback and the opportunity to build a future relationship with the investor company.

INVESTMENT THESIS

For this second edition, BeAble Capital, a venture capital firm specializing in industrial technology, will be invited. David López, partner at BeAble Capital, will be present on November 20th to listen and provide feedback to the selected entrepreneurs.

BeAble invests in early-stage and seed capital to boost innovative projects primarily emerging from academic and research institutions. BeAble specializes in investing in disruptive key enabling technologies (known as KETs) such as nanotechnology, photonics, micro and nanoelectronics, new materials, quantum and industrial biotechnology. Their investment focus lies in the following sectors:

• New energy model (green energy generation, storage systems, energy efficiency, and energy savings)
• Responsible consumption (circular economy, sustainable food, reliable packaging, and next-generation materials)
• Future Earth (environmental cleanup, sustainable water use, and protection of biodiversity and ecosystems)
• Sustainable and quality living (medical technology, translational medicine, food quality, and promotion of well-being)

Key points:

• Strong ties with universities, research centers, technology transfer offices, and industrial companies to discover promising new projects. The selection process involves the evaluation of scientific research, intellectual property, and competitive technologies from both a scientific and marketing perspective.
• Disruptive technologies with sustainable competitive advantages based on the company’s intellectual property and know-how, and high added value.
• Technologies that meet unmet needs in high-growth markets.
• Development of early stages of industrial startups: Proof of concept, Scale-up, Pilot plant or prototype, Flag-Ship, pre-industrial phases, and market launch to be positioned to attract other Venture Capital and Private Equity investors.
• Focus on Spain, but global in scope for alliances, licensing, co-development, and commercial agreements.
• Investment tickets from €150k to €3M.

Startups that are not selected also have the opportunity to access Aptki’s network and be recommended or introduced to another firm where they may be a better fit.
