TB Content Session #3 | Scytl, a lesson for scaleups: technology, investors and expectations, crisis, resilience and resurrection

27 September 2022 Content Session News

One of the first technological spin offs of the UAB. More than ten years growing at over 70%. A record round in Spain (104M$ in 2014), Paul Allen’s first investment in Europe and the first scaleup to announce its goal of going public on the Nasdaq.

Scytl, a provider of electronic voting systems and electoral technology born in 2001 in Barcelona, has a significant history in the city’s ecosystem, as well as one of the first major crises in the sector: in 2019 it suspended payments, in 2020 it was acquired by Paragon and now it is emerging with new projects.

Pere Vallès, CEO of Scytl between 2004 and 2016, and Silvia Caparrós, CEO since 2018, participated for the first time in a joint talk, organised by Tech Barcelona, to share the main mistakes and successes of this technological story. And they left us with some great learnings.

Auditori ACCIO-Tech Barcelona, Pier01. 26 September 2022.

A startup that was ahead of its time

Scytl was born as a company ahead of its time, when no country was using e-voting, and grew rapidly thanks to its ease of raising investment rounds. Already in 2002 it received a €1 million investment round led by Riva and García. As Pere Vallés explains, “we had the best technology protected by patents, we reached a market share of 70%, with sustained growth of between 60% and 120% for 10 years in a row, and the company even turned a profit, which is quite exotic for any start-up”.

Expectations that are difficult to meet

However, after the $104 million round raised in 2014, the problems began. “This is a fairly classic mistake in startups and scaleups: maximising valuation and generating expectations that are then difficult to meet”, Vallés reflects. To justify these expectations, Scytl diversified its technology portfolio and entered other emerging markets, “which were not ready”. The strategy did not work, so in 2016 the company restructured: it went from 600 to 200 employees and had to close business lines and offices.

Back to the origins

Silvia Caparrós had participated in the first round in 2002, joined the company as a lawyer and finally took the reins of Scytl in 2018 as CEO. As a strong supporter of the project, and aware of the demands it requires, she highlights the resilience and professionalism of the company. “We went through a restructuring, insolvency, an ERTE, a pandemic and a change of offices. But we have a very solid and organised professional base”. In addition, “there is a very ingrained culture of acting immediately in the face of challenges”. Now, with the security of working under Paragon, the company has returned to its origin, e-voting, deploying it both at government level and in private enterprise. “The prospects are very good,” concludes Caparrós.

20 July 2022 News Partners
  • The Silicon Valley-based innovation consultancy firm brings its global vision of innovation ecosystems to Barcelona

Barcelona, 20 July 2022. – Tech Barcelona, the private non-profit association that supports Barcelona’s digital and technological ecosystem, has partnered with Mind the Bridge, an innovation consultancy based in Silicon Valley, to access its global network of innovation connections and boost the city’s technological and digital ecosystem at a global level. With the incorporation of Tech Barcelona as a Corporate Partner, Mind The Bridge will reinforce its knowledge of what is already one of the leading ecosystems in Europe, and will be able to give it more visibility within its international network.

Founded in 2007 by Marco Marinucci while working at Google, Mind the Bridge was born with the aim of developing the Italian startup ecosystem and building bridges with Silicon Valley. Today, it has offices in San Francisco, London, Milan, Los Angeles, Seoul and Barcelona, and holds scaleup summits in many countries.

Mind the Bridge has published the Tech Scaleup Spain report, together with Acciona and Crunchbase, whose latest edition highlights Spain as a unique case in Europe due to the coexistence of two major startup ecosystems -Madrid and Barcelona-. The report highlights that Barcelona stands out as the main focus of growth and investment, with a total of 306 scaleups and an accumulated $6.7 billion raised since its creation.

For Alberto Onetti, Chairman of Mind the Bridge, “over the past few years Barcelona has become an international hub able to attract the Digital and Innovation Outposts of companies from all over the world. Reasons? A vibrant and growing startup scene, the abundance of international talent, a network mindset. That’s why we decided a few years ago to open an office in Barcelona that today hosts an 10+ international team. For Mind the Bridge joining Tech Barcelona is the natural step for being even more integrated in the local ecosystem and helping make it even more international. That’s why at the top of our to-do list is a joint study on the international companies that have a digital outpost in Barcelona”.

Miquel Martí, CEO of Tech Barcelona, believes that “the ecosystem of startups and corporates in Barcelona must grow together with the global and innovative vision of major international players such as Mind the Bridge, and the experience it can bring from large projects. The presence of the consultancy firm in the American, European and Asian markets allows Barcelona to connect with an extensive network of knowledge and global experience”.

Tech Up Nights Vol. 2 | Ocado Technology & StageInHome

12 July 2022 News Tech Barcelona TechUp Nights

The second edition of the Tech Up Nights was a complete success, gathering a top tech community willing to get to know leading tech projects that are being developed in the city. Pier01 rooftop is the best place to meet, while chatting and enjoying the views. Tech Up Nights is an initiative originally created together with Ocado Technology aiming to involve the leading tech companies in Barcelona. Here you have a recap of the speeches:

  • Ocado Technology: Miquel Puig. Is your search engine ready for ANY language? Our story with Japanese.

In this insightful presentation about Ocado Technology‘s search engine, Software Engineer Miquel Puig walked us through adapting the company’s search engine to Japanese. How difficult could it be to extend a search solution that already works in multiple languages to include a new one? An apparently straightforward and minimal effort project turns out to be a significant engineering challenge requiring rethinking and redesigning some of the features. Why? Because the engine was primarily designed with western languages in mind. Miquel explained the basics of Japanese, unveiling some of the complexities this language poses to the search domain and Ocado Technology’s existing system, the solutions implemented, and lessons learned.

This project is one of many exciting projects of Ocado Technology, the global tech player behind the online shopping of 11 of the world’s most forward-thinking retailers. With its origins in the UK in 2000, Ocado Technology is at the cutting edge of technology. The team is excited to be sharing knowledge with the community throughout the Tech Up Nights series. Stay tuned for the next editions!

  • StageInHome: Pol Albacar and Pau Domingo. Automatic decoration for your indoor spaces. How we use “magic” AI algorithms to generate unique images and increase real estate sellings.

StageInHome is providing decoration services to facelift properties about to be listed in a matter of seconds and at affordable prices, a fraction of the traditional home staging projects, as it doesn’t need human decorators to drive this decoration process thanks to its patented technology. Machine Learning & Computer Vision Engineers Pol Albacar and Pau Domingo explained how the company’s technological stack pivots mainly on the use of conditional Generative AI Models, but also other AI Models such as Classifiers, Object Detectors and Segmentators which can process and predict relevant information on images that will be useful for the image generation process. Their approach is also fully scalable and most importantly, more sustainable, as some of the projects include ephemeral decoration that will be eventually removed when the new tenants move in.

Women in Tech – Barcelona’ is launched to place Catalonia on the international map of digital and technological female talent

24 June 2022 News
  • The launch of the Catalan chapter of ‘Women in Tech’ is the result of the alliance between Polítiques Digitals and Tech Barcelona
  • The aim is to maximise the impact and internationalisation of the actions of the DonaTIC Plan and to give global visibility to Catalan female digital talent
  • The general director of Societat Digital, Joana Barbany, will act as host of the global initiative in Catalonia
  • Under the ‘Women in Tech Barcelona’ trademark, events, entrepreneurial activities and training programmes will be promoted

Barcelona, 20 June 2022.– Catalonia is now part of the global network of ‘Women in Tech’, an international non-profit organisation with a worldwide presence whose mission is to eliminate the gender gap and promote the access, presence and visibility of women in the technology sector.

As a result of the alliance between the Department of the Vice-Presidency and Digital Policies and Territory, through the Direcció General de Societat Digital, and Tech Barcelona, the Catalan chapter of the initiative was presented today in Barcelona, with a double objective: to give visibility to Catalan female digital and technological talent around the world and to internationalise the actions carried out in Catalonia to promote the presence, empowerment and leadership of women in the ICT sector, such as those included in the DonaTIC Plan, the strategic plan for the country promoted by Polítiques Digitals.

In this sense, for the general director of Societat Digital, Joana Barbany, who will act as the host of the global initiative in Catalonia, the creation of the Catalan chapter of ‘Women in Tech’ “represents a great opportunity to internationalise the DonaTIC Plan and position Catalonia in this great global network, where we can share and exchange experiences and knowledge in the field of promoting and visualising female talent in the digital and technological sector”. Barbany adds that “to move this initiative forward, we have a strategic partner, Tech Barcelona, which will allow us to join synergies with the Catalan digital and technological ecosystem with the common goal of increasing the presence, visibility and leadership of women in this area”.

The network is open to the participation of people or organisations that would like to join it, both to take part in the activities and to collaborate in the initiative as volunteers or mentors. Registration is open from today at this link.

The commitment of Polítiques Digitals and Tech Barcelona to add Barcelona and Catalonia to the Women in Tech network responds, above all, to the coincidence of global and local objectives. The international organisation promotes the empowerment of girls and women around the world, focusing on Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5b: achieve gender equality by harnessing technology. To do this, the organisation acts through four areas of focus: events, education programmes, entrepreneurship and social inclusion. Since 2018, Women in Tech’s actions in these four main areas have had a direct impact on more than 200,000 women worldwide.

These same areas are being addressed by different Catalan institutions and organisations, both from the public and private sectors, and for this reason, a commitment has been made to join this association by creating the Catalan chapter in Barcelona: to contribute from Catalonia to fulfil and work towards the objectives of the global Women in Tech and, at the same time, to achieve the specific objectives of the Catalan chapter and maximise its impact.

In this regard, the Catalan chapter’s action plan for this year includes the promotion of events, entrepreneurship and networking activities and mentoring and training programmes under the banner ‘Women in Tech Barcelona’. The expected impact is an increase in the number of girls interested in technology and STEM vocations, in the number of women participating as speakers at international technology conferences and events, and in the number of women in management and leadership positions in the digital and technology ecosystem.

“At Tech Barcelona, we have been working for years to advance towards parity in the technology sector, and being able to strengthen this commitment with a global seal such as Women in Tech and with the institutional support of the Generalitat will allow us to reach our objectives more quickly: to have more women in the community, more expert women and make them more visible”, says Mar Galtés, director of corporate development at Tech Barcelona. “Having role models is fundamental to generate change and we will use our entire structure of activities, community and contents to make this possible”, she adds.

The creation and promotion of the Catalan chapter of Women in Tech is therefore in line with the four action lines of the DonaTIC Plan promoted by the Government through Digital Policies to consolidate and further develop public policies that promote and recognise the role of women in the field of ICTs: making ICTs attractive to the female talent of the future; making women technologists and women-created content more visible; training and empowering everyone digitally; and promoting full and effective participation of ICT women in decision-making and entrepreneurship.
