Bellvitge Hospital and Tech Barcelona collaborate to promote technological innovation in healthcare

29 April 2022 News
  • The agreement will promote the positioning of the metropolitan area as an international benchmark in digital health, personalised medicine and data work

Bellvitge University Hospital (HUB) and Tech Barcelona, a non-profit association that works to consolidate Barcelona as a benchmark on the international digital and technological scene, have signed a collaboration agreement to promote technological innovation in the field of health. Thanks to the agreement, the innovation business ecosystem represented by Tech Barcelona will be connected to the HUB with the aim of promoting networking in ICT and health, and thus impacting the greatest number of patients.

During the signing ceremony, the Innovation Model of the Southern Metropolitan Area of the Institut Català de la Salut (ICS) and the HUB, with 21 Health and digital transformation projects underway in areas such as heart failure, arrhythmias, stroke, surgical procedures in gynaecology, critical patients and diagnostics in infectious, oncological and neurodegenerative pathologies, was discussed in depth.

Dr. Montserrat Figuerola, manager of the Southern Metropolitan Area of the ICS and the HUB, said that “this agreement is a further step to consolidate the commitment that Bellvitge Hospital has made to healthcare and technological innovation, a lever for change in the organisation, and to generate a collaborative network with innovative sectors and our professionals. We want to guarantee the best service and experience for patients, thus responding to their health needs”.

For his part, Miquel Martí, CEO of Tech Barcelona, adds that “the health sector is one of the fundamental pillars of the innovation ecosystem in Barcelona and as such is one of the strategic priorities of the association. For Tech Barcelona it is essential to reach alliances with clinical reference environments such as the Southern Metropolitan Territorial Management of the ICS and the Hospital de Bellvitge, and to help connect them with startups and technology companies in the sector”.

After the signing ceremony, a visit was made to the Surgical Block of the HUB, with a total of 31 operating theatres, three of which are hybrid operating theatres, that is to say, they make it possible to perform surgery and imaging tests in the same room. Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield joins Tech Barcelona as partner

25 April 2022 News Partners
  • The global shopping centre operator, owner of Westfield Glòries, Westfield La Maquinista and Splau, joins the association to participate in the digital transformation of the retail sector.

Barcelona, 25 April 2022. – Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield (URW), a global shopping centre developer and operator, joins Tech Barcelona as a Corporate Partner, to actively participate in the development and application of technological solutions that drive retail transformation.

Retail is one of the key economic sectors in the functioning and development of cities, and one of the most impacted by digital transformation. In this sense, the future of retail involves rethinking the physical space and the relationship with consumers, the adoption of new payment systems and new distribution formulas and the management of the last mile. For Tech Barcelona it is strategic to bring together the companies that are providing technological solutions and the large operators that can apply them.

URW currently has a significant presence in Barcelona, where it operates two of the largest shopping centres, Westfield Glòries and Westfield La Maquinista, as well as the Splau shopping centre. In total, the developer owns 85 shopping centres in 12 countries and employs more than 2,800 professionals.

According to Marilyne Mesiano, Country Manager of URW in Spain, “being an active part of the development of the technological and digital fabric of Barcelona through the incorporation of Tech Barcelona is a great opportunity to contribute our global knowledge of the retail world to the local development of the sector”. “We are convinced that, in turn, the talent in the association will be a very valuable input for us, and will allow us to continue working on the constant improvement of the customer experience through innovative initiatives,” says Mesiano.

For Miquel Martí, CEO of Tech Barcelona, “retail is a sector in which many transformations converge: mobility, payment systems and logistics. At Tech Barcelona, we want the city’s technology ecosystem to actively participate in this retail transformation and become a reference model for the adaptation of large operators and small businesses to new solutions and new consumer habits”.

The agreement is also part of URW’s Better Places 2030 programme, through which it seeks to make a positive contribution to the communities in which it operates and to achieve the highest environmental standards to create better cities.

Miquel Martí, CEO of Tech Barcelona, adds that “the fintech sector is consolidating itself as one of the big bets of the city’s technological ecosystem. TB: An inspiration.

AC: A young girl who, after suffering a spinal cord injury caused by an accident, always comes to try out the exoskeleton with a smile on her face. She is an example of overcoming adversity, of how to move forward despite adversity and enjoy life with optimism.

TB Members Calling #19 | Guillermo Preckler: “It’s good to listen, but I rely on intuition.”

17 March 2022 Members Calling News

Guillermo Preckler (Barcelona, 1995)

Co-founder and CEO of Brickbro, a Barcelona-based proptech that connects sellers of commercial assets with buyers through technology, specialising in the reconversion of unused spaces.

“I am passionate about the real estate sector. In fact, at the age of 16 I founded a company that bought and sold parking spaces in Barcelona”. Later, he graduated in Business Administration and Industrial Engineering, worked as a consultant at PwC, and set up SmartContact, a software that facilitates customer relations and increases team productivity. A life dedicated to entrepreneurship.

TB: What is the purpose of your project?

GP: Brickbro is more than just a startup. It transforms cities into meeting points for the community, connecting people with the businesses, services and experiences that bring neighbourhoods to life.

TB: A good idea you have had.

GP: The parking space business. This led me to become an entrepreneur at the age of 16 and to realise how passionate I was about the real estate sector.

TB: A bad professional experience.

GP: The difficulty in building trust at the beginning of the project. We were young and just starting out, and in a sector like real estate it was difficult to gain the user’s trust.

TB: The best advice you’ve ever been given.

GP: You have to be true to yourself and what you think. It’s fine to listen to others, but it’s pure intuition that really makes you less risk averse.

TB: An inspiration.

GP: My father.

TB: A start-up (other than your own).

GP: Loft, a Brazilian real estate startup.

TB: A book to recommend.

GP: “Numbers Don’t Lie: 71 Things You Need to Know About the World”. It is a book that covers all kinds of topics: cultural, scientific, geographical… It makes you reflect and understand how the world used to work, and why it works that way now.

TB: A series or film or song that defines your moment in life.

GP: The film ‘Intouchables’ by Olivier Nakache. I like it a lot!

TB: A recipe, a meal, a restaurant.

GP: When it comes to food, I always say “yes” to sweets. Regarding the restaurant, I recommend ‘Informal’, located in Barcelona.

TB: A city, a journey.

GP: London as a city to live in. And Rwanda as a trip that surprised me.

TB: Where would you invest 100k?

GP: In a project that is starting up and where that money can have an impact.

TB: And a million euros?

GP: In Brickbro, no doubt.

TB: If you were not an entrepreneur…

GP: The truth is that I don’t see myself doing anything else. If I couldn’t be an entrepreneur, I would still try to be involved.

TB: What is Tech Barcelona for you?

GP: A community where to create synergies with all the players in the ecosystem, with a strong commitment to innovation and entrepreneurial talent in the city of Barcelona.
