Gracias a la suma de la investigación científica y la innovación en este sector, nuestra sociedad ha avanzando en diversos aspectos, aunque todavía se plantea un sinfín de retos a resolver.

Nowadays we are talking about Smart Agriculture or Agriculture 4.0, which will no longer depend on applying water, fertilizers, and pesticides uniformly across entire fields. Instead, farmers will use the minimum quantities required and target very specific areas. It will be possible to grow crops in arid areas, making use of abundant and clean resources such as the sun and seawater. Other innovations – such as 3D printing of foods, cultured meat, genetic modification, and seawater agriculture – are still in the early stages, but could all be game changers in the next decade.

Farms and agricultural operations will have to be run very differently, primarily due to advancements in technology such as sensors, devices, machines, and information technology. Future agriculture will use sophisticated deep technologies such as robots, temperature and moisture sensors, aerial images, and GPS technology.

The combination of the two sectors deep tech and sustainable packaging have a huge potential in the food industry. In fact, packaging has an enabling role in the Circular Economy: by optimising resources, reducing the waste and extending the value of products.

Innovation is crucial in order to generate shared value across the entire ecosystem, especially with consumers, which present increasingly specific and demanding demands. There is a transversed trend to sustainability. The market shows increased consumer interest in sustainable products, especially in the case of millennials. A reduction of the volume of packaging was generated, as well as a re-design of the products and containers of the distribution marks. Packaging companies are setting medium to long term sustainability objectives. A balance between functionality and sustainability is required, for instance when looking at the use of multilayer plastic packaging that increases the shelf life of the products but is difficult to recycle. Moreover, research is done for the development of new materials. However, even though the customer demands more sustainable products, the cost difference is still representing a brake as consumer behaviour studies show.

Let’s have a closer look at what makes a city actually smart? Smart cities add digital intelligence to the urban world and use it to solve public problems and achieve a higher quality of life.

There are three layers of “smartness”, that will elevate life in cities of the future:

– The tech base includes high-speed communication networks of connected devices and sensors
– Smart applications and data analysis capabilities, translating raw data into alerts, insight, and action
– Adoption and usage, often leading to better decisions and behaviour change

Smart city applications could affect various quality-of-life dimensions: safety, time and convenience, health, environmental quality, social connectedness and civic participation, jobs, and the cost of living.

For example, the city of Barcelona has adopted smart technologies by implementing a network of fiber optics throughout the city, providing free high-speed Wi-Fi that supports the IoT. By integrating smart water, lighting and parking management, Barcelona saved €75 million of city funds and created 47,000 new jobs in the smart technology sector (status 2019).

Working on sustainable energy development is not only about reducing CO2 emissions and fostering energy diversification.
